TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY CASES

WHAT IS TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY?

Traumatic brain injury, or (TBI), is a concussion to the head that occurs when an impact or forceful motion, such as what can occur in a motor vehicle or construction accident, causes the brain to crush against the hard skull, resulting in bruising, bleeding or tearing of the soft, easily damaged tissue of the brain. The head doesn’t have to strike an object for this to occur. Extreme jarring can even cause traumatic brain injury. In addition, when blood vessels tear and there is bleeding, pressure can build up in the skull, further damaging brain tissue and neural connections.

Traumatic brain injury, whether caused by a motor vehicle accident, construction accident or biking accident, often has outward manifestations of injury like a skull fracture or subdural hematoma. Brain injuries can be long-lasting and sometimes difficult to prove, especially when there are no outward physical signs of injury. In fact, a mild traumatic brain injury can be sustained, yet neurological examinations can be “normal.”

CAUSES OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can occur in a variety of ways. TBI can occur when there is a rapid acceleration and deceleration that impacts the brain as in whiplash or a fall. This type of injury is sometimes referred to as a “closed head injury” or “concussion.” Traumatic brain injuries can also result when the head comes into contact with another object as in a trucking accident, car accident or a blow to the head.
